Mouse-over Spanish text fragments in red to see English translation

1.- Conjugación

Keep always in mind that the conjugation of the imperative mood changes when using the negative imperative. There is one conjugation for the afirmative imperative and one for the negative imperative.

hables comas/vivas
Él/Ella/Usted hable coma/viva
Nosotros hablemos comamos/vivamos
Vosotros habléis comáis/viváis
Ellos/Ustedes hablen coman/vivan

2.- Formación del imperativo negativo

The negative imperative is formed by simply adding the negative particle "NO" in front of the conjugated (negative imperative) verb.

Examples:

Imperative Negative imperative
Sube las escaleras
Go upstairs
---> No subas las escaleras
Don't go upstairs
Coge el teléfono
Pick up the phone

El Imperativo Negativo con Pronombres

When the negative imperative is combined with direct or indirect object pronouns, these are always placed in between "NO" and the verb.

Placing the pronouns after the verb in the negative form is incorrect.

---> No te lo comas
Don't eat it
Cómprala
Buy it
---> No la compres
Don't buy it.
