OK. In today's news stories there are quite a few useful expressions.
Cinta:
¿Por dónde empezamos?
Lucas:
Well, we can begin with two expressions we used while commenting on El amor en época de crisis.
Cinta:
You said... El negocio del sexo está por los suelos y todo lo relacionado con el romance está en auge. ¿Qué significa estar por los suelos?
estar por los suelos means to be at rock bottom or to hit rock bottom and we use it to say that a business, for example, is not in a very good shape, or that prices are very low; but also we can use estar por los suelos to describe somebody's morale or spirits as being very low. For example... La moral de los trabajadores está por los suelos. Worker's morale is at rock bottom.
Cinta:
Y ¿qué significa estar en auge?
Lucas:
estar en auge means to be on the increase or to be enjoying a boom and we use it to describe quite the opposite of estar por los suelos. We use it to say that a business, for example, is on the increase, or is enjoying a boom. For example... Los servicios de contactos en línea están en auge. Dating services online are on the increase.
Cinta:
Hey, Lucas, I also noticed a cool expression you used when we were commenting on Hamid Karzai's explanation about not being aware of all the articles in the Afghan's Marriage Law... ¿te acuerdas?
Lucas:
Claro. Yo te pregunté: ¿Tú te tragas esa explicación?
Cinta:
Yeah, you did. I can tell you've been practicing around.
Lucas:
Claro. Tú sabes que... práctica, práctica, práctica... es mi mantra.
Cinta:
¡Claro que sí! Y ¿qué significa la expresión tragarse algo?
Lucas:
The expression tragarse algo means to "buy" something, like in to accept or to believe something somebody says without questioning it or using our own reasoning...
Cinta:
Vamos a poner un ejemplo.
Lucas:
Vale. ¿Qué taaaal? Los jóvenes de hoy no se tragan nada... son demasiado listos.
Cinta:
Today's young people don't buy anything...they are too smart.
Lucas:
