Bienvenidos a la sección de gramática de News in Slow Spanish. Hoy vamos a hablar del pasado. Lucas, do you remember which are the two verbal tenses used in Spanish to talk about the past?
Lucas:
Sí, creo que sí. Los dos tiempos verbales para hablar del pasado en español son el pretérito (the preterite tense) y el imperfecto (the imperfect tense), ¿verdad?
Cinta:
¡Sí, así es! And we use one or the other depending on...
Lucas:
...depending on which type of past action we want to describe.
Exacto. Can you tell us what is the main difference between the usages of both tenses?
Lucas:
Por supuesto. El pretérito describes past actions that are completed, in other words, that finished at a certain moment in the past. Like, for example: Ayer fui al cine.
Cinta:
Yesterday you went to the movies. That's a clear example of a complete past action. And what type of actions require the use of el imperfecto?
Lucas:
El imperfecto is used to describe past actions that have no beginning or end. Like... El sol brillaba. (The sun was shinning.)
Cinta:
Sí, fenomenal. That's basically the main difference between both tenses. Let's now zoom in on the main uses of el pretérito.
Lucas:
Vale, muy bien.
Cinta:
Lucas, dime.. ¿Cuándo empezó la película y cuándo terminó?
Lucas:
La película empezó a las siete de la tarde y terminó a las 10 de la noche.
Cinta:
Muy bien... ¿qué aprendemos con este ejemplo?
Lucas:
We learn that el pretérito is used to describe the beginning and the end of past actions.
Cinta:
Exacto. Y.. Lucas, ¿Qué pasó ayer por la noche en tu casa?
Lucas:
Ayer por la noche una persona desconocida entró a mi casa, sonó la alarma y después llegó la policía.
Cinta:

Lucas:
This example illustrates the use of el pretérito to narrate a series of past actions.
Cinta:
Excelente. And let's now zoom in on the main uses of el imperfecto.
Lucas:

Lucas... Cuando eras pequeño, ¿dónde pasabas los veranos?
Lucas:
Cuando era pequeño, mi familia y yo pasábamos los veranos en la playa.
Cinta:
So, here... you are describing an habitual action in the past. You are telling us where you would spend your summers when you were a kid. And... tell us now, ¿Cómo era tu mamá?
Lucas:
Mi mamá era una mujer muy guapa y muy elegante. Tenía el pelo castaño y los ojos verdes. Siempre estaba contenta y nunca tenía estrés.
Cinta:
Now you used el imperfecto to describe physical and emotional states or conditions in the past.
Lucas:
Exactamente.
