Ser with Adjectives

We use ser when referring to features that we consider the person, thing, animal, or place owns. We see it like this every day. We do not observe a change. That is, we use ser to define or classify subjects, comparing them with others.

Tu perro es muy juguetón porque todavía es un cachorro.
Your dog is very playful because it's still a puppy.

Eduardo es muy simpático y además es muy guapo.
Eduardo is very nice and he's also very handsome.

Tu piso es muy luminoso y es gigante.
Your apartment is very luminous and it's huge.

Estar with Adjectives

We use estar when referring to features that are not typical of the person, thing, animal, or place, when we see a change. That is, we use estar when comparing the subject with itself at another time.

Tu perro es muy juguetón pero hoy está triste y muy quieto.
Your dog is very playful but today is sad and very quiet.

Eduardo es muy simpático y además hoy con ese traje está muy guapo.
Eduardo is very nice and, moreover, today, in that suit, he's very handsome.
