Comparativos con verbos


When the two elements of the comparison depend on the same verb, use the following structure:

Noun clause 1 (NC1) + Verb (V) + comparative particle (CP) + noun clause 2 (NC2)

Superioridad: más que

Mi coche cuesta más que el tuyo.

Inferioridad: menos que

Mi madre trabaja menos que mi padre.

El grado superlativo

The "adjetivo superlativo" expresses the quality of a noun in its highest degree. There are two types of "adjetivo superlativo":

A.- Relativo (el/las/los/las más/menos....de)

This type expresses the highest degree with relation to others.

Mi hermano es el más listo de toda su clase.
My brother is the smartest one of his class.

La prima de Ana es la menos atractiva de toda su familia.
Ana's cousin is the least attractive of her family.

B.- Absoluto (muy+adjective or adjetive+ísimo/+érrimo*)

This type expresses the highest degree with itself.

Mi hermano es muy listo/listísimo.
My brother is very smart.

Mi único vecino es un señor muy viejo/viejísimo.
My only neighbor is a very old man.

* Some adjectives take the sufix -ísimo and some others take the sufix -érrimo instead, some of them can take both and some of them cannot take any sufix.

libre --> libérrimo
célebre --> celebérrimo
negro --> nigérrimo / negrísimo
pobre --> paupérrimo / pobrísimo
mísero --> misérrimo
acre --> acérrimo
pulcro --> pulquérrimo / pulcrísimo
áspero --> aspérrimo / asperísimo
próximo --> muy próximo
anterior --> muy anterior
ciego --> muy ciego
heroico --> muy heroico
