In Spain, vivir del cuento is an informal way of saying "to live without working."

In the expression "vivir del cuento", cuento means a lie or a deception, because in order to live without working one must find a way to get the necessary means at least to get by without much effort and more often than not this way is not an honorable one. Some common ways to get by without striving to earn one’s living with honest work are: being a student whose expenses are fully covered by his or her parents, but whose efforts to finish his or her degree are not very clear, being one of those famous people who have no real talent but who for some reason enjoy some popularity and get paid to tell their stories or "cuentos" on TV, they talk about their love affairs, divorces, etc, any gossip to get the public entertained for a sum of money, and again, this is an easy way to get an income without really earning it. There are people who live at expenses of others in different approaches. In short, the idea expressed by "vivir del cuento" is to live more or less comfortably at expenses of others without making any real contribution to society.
