La leyenda del escudo de Valencia
En el siglo XII, los musulmanes dominaban gran parte de la península ibérica. En el Norte de la península había tres reducidas áreas cristianas: el reino de Navarra, la corona de Castilla y la corona de Aragón. Las tres dinastías tenían un interés común: expandirse. Era el inicio de la reconquista cristiana.

Cuenta la leyenda que el rey de Aragón estaba unido en matrimonio a María de Montpellier. El reino de Aragón necesitaba un heredero urgentemente pero el rey no amaba a su esposa y ella estaba triste y deprimida.

– “Yo no tengo hijos. El rey me repudia”.
– “Yo que María de Montpellier es mi esposa”, decía el rey. “Pero ella es una mujer horrible y yo el rey os digo: ¡yo no deseo a mi esposa!”
