Marta:	Ayer metí la pata, Rylan,.. y no me atrevo a volver a casa de mi vecina.
Rylan:	¿Cómo que metiste la pata? ¡Ay, cuéntame! ¿Qué has hecho? Va, seguro que no es tan grave como crees.
Marta:	No sé qué decirte, me encontré en una situación la mar de embarazosa y en vez de arreglarlo, lo iba empeorando.
Rylan:	Todo se puede arreglar en esta vida, todo.

The familiar expression meter la pata is highly used in Spain when somebody makes a mistake or tactless remark. Normally these remarks are innocent and never intentional, but can nevertheless lead to embarrassing and tense situations, and sometimes may even have some unpleasant consequences. More often than not, however, these type of mistakes and inappropriate comments have no major consequences and with time become funny anecdotes. Two equivalent English expressions could be to talk too much and to cross the line.

Tu amiga Carmen ha engordado diez kilos en los últimos tres meses. Tú no la has visto durante esos tres meses. Un día, cuando vas a su casa a visitarla, tú piensas que ella está embarazada y le preguntas: "Carmen, ¿estás embarazada?" Pero ella no contesta y te mira con una cara rara. Inmediatamente tú sabes que "has metido la pata". ¡Uy!

Pata is the leg and also the foot of animals. But to be funny, pata can also be used to refer to the leg or foot of a person. Here are other familiar expressions with "pata."

estirar la pata (to kick the bucket)
Decimos estirar la pata cuandoo alguien muere.

La abuela de José estiró la para a los ciento tres años.
Jose’s grandmother kicked the bucket at age 103.

patas arriba (upside down; a mess)
Decimos que un lugar está patas arriba cuando está muy desordenado y sucio.

Tengo la casa patas arriba.
The house is in a complete mess.

Cuando tu hermano se fue, lo dejó todo patas arriba.
When your brother left, he left everything upside down.

mala pata (bad luck)
¡qué mala pata! ... tener mala pata
Decimos ¡qué mala pata! o tener mala pata para expresar descontento cuando la suerte nos abandona. Podemos utilizar esta expresión en situaciones como:

Fallar un penalti en el último minuto de un partido de fútbol.

Suspender un examen por una centésima.

Perder el tren por un minuto.

Ejemplo 1:

El secretario del partido metió la pata en su discurso cuando dijo: "Y si no nos dejaran hacer lo que queremos hacer, da igual, lo "haceriamos" de todos modos". ¡Se dice "haríamos"!
The party's secretary put his foot into it in his speech when he said: "If they don't let us do what we want to do, it doesn't matter, we "wud do it" anyway." You should have said "would do it"!

Ejemplo 2:

¿Por qué siempre meto la pata cuando hablo con esa chica que me gusta? El otro día le dije que se alegrara porque le veía muy triste y me dijo que su abuela había fallecido.
Why do I always put my foot into it when I talk to this girl I like? The other day I told her to cheer up because I saw her down and she said that her grandmother had passed away.

Ejemplo 3:

Antes de meter la pata, piensa bien lo que quieres decir o hacer para no quedar en ridículo.
Before putting your foot into it, think twice on what you want to say or do so you don't embarrass yourself.
