This week we continue with the uses of the preposition por. The following are the last five uses of this preposition.
6.- For a period of time - use the preposition por when you want to express the duration of an event or thing in time.
Estaré aquí por ocho horas
I will be here for eight hours
Estuvimos esperando el autobús por más de media hora
We were waiting for the bus for more than half an hour
Viajaremos a Cuba por tres semanas
We will travel to Cuba for three weeks
7.- For the sake of, supporting or in favor of - use the preposition por when explaining the reason of why somebody does something.
Lo hago por mi familia
I do it for the sake of my family
Estudió medicina por su padre
He studied medicine for his father
Los estudiantes se manifiestan por la reforma educativa
Students demonstrate in favor of the educational reform
8.- Because of, due to - use the preposition por when explaining the cause of a problem.
Estoy nerviosa por el examen de mañana
I'm nervous because of tomorrow's test
No pudimos llegar a tiempo por culpa de la lluvia
We couldn't get there on time due to the rain
Perdimos el partido por tu culpa
We lost the game because of you

Las ventas de coches han subido un veinte por ciento este mes
